Yes, it is true that a shot at the rim has a higher likelihood of going in than one taken further away, and you get a higher chance of getting a trip to the line when you drive to the bucket, but it doesn't take a whole lot of common sense to realize the following...
One, refs are less likely to call fouls in tight games in the final seconds. Two, if the defense believes you are going to drive, and you pull up to shoot, you will have an uncontested shot. Yes, it's hard to run full speed while dribbling, stop your dribble, jump up and make an accurate shot, with your momentum carrying you forward in the air, but that's why you practice.
