Some quick facts about the Stanford - SJSU series . . .
Last time Stanford played San Jose State was in 2009. Stanford won 42-17. Stanford scored six TDs on two runs, a pass, an interception return, a punt return, and a kickoff return. I cannot remember another Stanford game in which Stanford scored TDs five different ways.
In that 2009 game, Chris Owusu returned the opening kickoff for a TD (94 yards). He did the same thing the following week against Washington.
That 2009 game was Andrew Luck's first game in Stanford Stadium. He went 9 for 12, 170 yards, 1 TD, 1 interception.
Stanford has won its last 3 games against San Jose State, winning in the first three years of the Harbaugh era (2007-09). The combined score of those 3 games was 102-27.
Stanford has won 7 of its last 8 games against SJSU. Stanford's only loss during that time was the 35-34 loss at Spartan Stadium during Stanford's horrible 1-11 season in 2006.
Stanford has not lost to SJSU at Stanford Stadium since the 2000 season.
David Shaw has a record of 6-0 against San Jose State -- he was 3-0 as a player in 1992-94, and 3-0 as an assistant coach in 2007-09.
Stanford's honorary captain for this game is Willie Shaw. Willie hasn't fared nearly as well against SJSU as his son. Willie's record against SJSU as an assistant coach was 1-3-1, with a win in 1976, losses in 1975, 1989, and 1990, and a tie in 1974. Let's hope the son's karma is stronger than the father's.
From 1981 through 2000, Stanford's record against San Jose State was just 10-9. (By comparison, Stanford went 14-5-1 against Cal during those same years.) Since then, Stanford has gone 7-1 against SJSU.
Stanford has a very comfortable overall lead in the series: 49-14-1.
