I remember there was a player a number of years ago who underwent surgery at Stanford Hospital while still in high school. Since the team didn't pay for the visit it didn't count as a recruiting trip. Since the athlete was already on campus the coaches were allowed to go talk to him and it didn't count as improper coach-athlete communication. I would assume that if the coaches are allowed to talk to the athlete (and his family) that they would be allowed to talk to the doctors also (with the family's permission, of course.)
