I'm sort of glad that there were TV shots showing Stanford students on laptops during pre-game festivities.
I have to second Terry's notion - many Stanford students, and many Stanford fans (myself included) are both diehard fans and also have day jobs that probably are a fair bit more important than the average SEC fan that pre-parties for 11 hours prior to a game.
If/when I have a child at Stanford, I'd completely agree with Terry - if he/she is going to be at the Grove for 11 hours, there damn well better be a book or computer in his/her hand..
In fact, I would be pretty amused if there *were* hundreds of students on set at 6am... typing away at laptops. And taking notes on their readings. All the way until gametime.
I can just imagine the featurette now:
exasperated ESPN producer - "We're live!!! This looks terrible! Those kids are... *studying* or something! Go out and see what the hell they're doing!"
ESPN sideline reporterette, walking amongst the eucalyptus trees, thousands of students reading books and typing away on laptops in the shade. Walks up to a young man in glasses, a backwards Stanford hat, and a "fear the tree" shirt: "So... what are you working on, young man? I notice you and your compatriots here seem to be studying."
Student: "I'm taking a biology class. Right now, I'm learning about phenylamino-pyrimidine derivatives that specifically target tyrosine kinase for inhibition."
Reportertte: "Umm... I don't really know what that means. You do realize that there's going to be a football game tonight, right? #2 Stanford versus #5 Oregon? Maybe you didn't realize, but this is the first time ESPN Gameday has come to your campus! What could possibly be so important right now about what you're working on?"
Student: "We're trying to cure cancer."
(pause)
Reporterette: "Right. Keep on it, young man. Umm... Rece - back to you. (under her breath: 'god bless these nerds.')
