I think the cut line is appearance in less than 20% of the games during a season.  The coaches need to make a decision before Arizona about redshirts.

I disagree. Maybe we don't need four running backs, but in order to keep Taylor fresh, we probably need three. And there are a lot of injuries at the running back position. If you make the decision to redshirt him, and then someone gets injured, you'd probably end up pulling his redshirt, and he'd be less well-prepared to take on a role in the RB rotation.

Second, during the off-season, Stanford fans were very excited about Wilkerson. He was coming off a really promising freshman year. Why have you decided that he won't be a big contributor this season? Based on one bad game? (He played poorly against San Jose State, in a game where the run blocking was poor,  and only got two carries against Duke.) That's not enough data for me.

Finally, there is no reason for Stanford to hold anything back this season, on the basis of helping the team in future years. As much as I like our recruiting trajectory, I seriously doubt we'll be as well-positioned to make another run at the BCS title game over any of the next three years. If I thought burning every redshirt on the team would help us this season, I'd be in favor of it.

No chance Gaffney is on the team next year, he's basically a lock to go in the first round of the MLB draft. And if Taylor blows up he could leave early since RBs have such shorts careers. Wilkerson could easily be the man next year at RB.

I think we'll need him this year.  Surprised he didn't get many touches against Duke.  Last year one of his weaknesses was picking up blitzes.  With the new players on the line this year, that skill is even more important.  Still, if Wilkerson can pick up the blitz at the right times and if the team can install immediate check downs to the halfback in the area the linebacker vacated, Wilkerson has potential to be a big offensive weapon.

that is my recollection as well, although I thought is was 30% and you round up to the next whole game, so for football if you play in the first 4 games and are injured and cannot play in the remaining games you can take an injury redshirt, if you play even one play and are not hurt you cannot redshirt.

One of Taylor's great skills....and one that gives him a big leg up on other running backs...is picking up and negating the blitzer. He's an excellent blocker and runner.

The draft sites I've read have him as a 5-7 rounder. Is that worth skipping out on senior year on The Farm and a Stanford degree for?

I could just be overestimating the rationality of 20-year-olds, though.
