I go back a bit so I’ll start 1955 going to Seals stadium to see my first major league team. It was an exhibition the Seals vs the Red Sox with Teddy Ballgame

1968 to Yankee Stadium for a double header abd the Mick played both games. Same year to Connie Mack Stadium in Philly and watched a childhood friend pitch. I was at Ft Dix New Jersey at the time

Had a nice roadie tradition for a while, 4 of us alums and our spouses, all around a Stanford football game.

Annapolis/Navy.  One of us lived in DC and showed us a great time.

Chicago/ND: Marecic scored his back to back TDs in front of us.  Got out of SB ASAP and enjoyed Chi-town to the max.  Sunday brunch at the House of Blues.

Orange Bowl, $18 mojitos in Miami Beach, ouch.  But what a great game.

Durham/Duke.  Just like in the old Stanford Stadium, our seats were on the goal line but the place was empty and we moved up to the 40.  My first exposure to chicken n waffles with fried okra, Sunday morning.

NYC/Army.  Saw a Broadway musical Fri nite, took the ferry up to West Point Saturday, spent Sunday at MOMA.  What's not to like?

Chicago/ND the second time.  Too wet and cold and ND the second time loses its cuteness. Plus the late kickoff meant our spouses had to wait until 9pm for dinner.

Fiesta Bowl.  Paid way too much for "VIP Box Seats."  Still waiting for the Hand of God to guide those FGs through.  Maybe Maradona should have been our kicker.

Dishonorable Mention to LAColiseum/USC back in the day.  We had those wonderful seats in the end zone bleachers courtesy of the Toejams, it actually rained most of the game, we got pasted 49-0, and I think all the scoring was in the far end zone.

Michigan football was always a big deal in my house growing up. I learned Hail The Victors along with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. So for my Dad's 70th birthday, my three brothers and I organized a weekend in Ann Arbor with Dad and his two brothers to watch Michigan host Michigan State in the Big House. My Dad and uncles all graduated from Michigan (along with one of my brothers).

It was an epic weekend in every respect. My uncles had not been back on campus since they graduated 40-50 years prior. All of the alums had a great time walking around and reminiscing. And the football game itself was a classic. Biggest 4th quarter comeback in Michigan Stadium history and Michigan beat their hated rival in 3 OTs. The photo of 7 happy May boys after the game is now part of family lore. Since Dad passed away in March, I won't ever experience a road trip like that ever again.

I took a road trip with my Stanford roommate to a Stanford-Colorado football game at Folsom Field in the 1990s (can't remember the exact year). It was a beautiful setting and Boulder is an awesome town. Took a side trip to Estes Park/Rocky Mountain National Park.

I remember that Stanford lost the game on a controversial--well, controversial to Stanford fans--last-minute touchdown. But I would still recommend without reservation Boulder, CO for a September road trip.

We met up with two of his cousins from Iowa,  who also were among his closest friends.  Stayed at the Knickebocker in Chicago. (It was a Cardozo trip). Hit Wrigley Friday afternoon.  Went to one of Chicago’s famous steak houses for dinner and a couple martinis.  

Hopped on the Stanford train to SB in the morn.    Watched as Stanford fell behind 16-0. Turned to Dad and said “ We came 2,000 miles for this ” You know the rest.

I don’t remember the train back. Delirium set in about 1/3 of the way home.  I just remember it was a happy train! Dad always talked about how special that trip was.  And it certainly was.

Years later I got the opportunity to meet John Lynch on the sidelines of a Stanford game. He was with his young son. I don’t often do this as I think athletes don’t like to be bugged– but I walked up to him and I said something along the lines of: “Mr. Lynch in 1992 I took my father to the Stanford- Notre Dame game for his 70th birthday. It was one of the special times that we had together. And you were incredible that day.  i still remember you flattening Jerome Bettis causing that key fumble. And I just want to let you know that we appreciated it.” I was glad to be able to say that to him with his son there.

 I’ll never forget that trip.

All our great road trips for Stanford sports have been WBB related, including every time they have played in Oregon since 1990 -- except for the year the dog was too sick for us to leave her. We have always driven. But the most memorable trip via car was in 1997, when the NCAA regionals were in Missoula.  We missed our plane flight from SF on Thursday afternoon and couldn't find any sort of backup flight. So we made an on the spot decision to drive, to get there for the game on Friday night. Drove all night, made it after 1100 miles on the road in time for the Friday game. For other sports, lots of trips, all track and field and/or Olympics related.

We left after work, cruising down I-5 and then east on I-15 before hitting total gridlock in the middle of the night as we approached Tehachapi Pass. Thankfully, there were blankets in the car as we were stuck in sub-freezing temps for 3 or 4 hours. When traffic started moving again, we passed hundreds of jugs of Gallo wine which had been deposited by a jackknifed big rig. We made it to our hotel in Vegas and got in a nap before rooting on the Cardinal to another Final Four (in New Orleans where they lost in the semis to eventual champ Tennessee). The trip to the Final Four in Los Angeles the following year was less eventful (and more satisfying!).

We had a bunch of frequent flyer miles that were going to expire. Couldn't think of anything we wanted to do in Vegas other than go to the regional. So we flew to Vegas for the semis, took a cab to UNLV. After the game was over, took a cab back to the airport and flew home. Two nights later, flew back to Vegas for the final. Again, a cab to UNLV for the game. After the game, a cab back to the airport and again flew home. Next weekend, we flew to New Orleans for the final four, stayed there the whole weekend.
