Having half the undergrads on campus for each of 4 quarters including summer would likely require some accommodation for athletes whose seasons generally span at least 2 quarters and generally train year-rpund.

The athletes will likely benefit from their student-athlete academic resources across all quarters, and that will likely help them stay engaged in courses even if they are designated as remote access students. Also, the remote access stuff has been a reality for most D1 NCAA athletes in the USA.
It is noteworthy that the school will have a lot of undergraduate students roaming around campus in the summer of 2021. There are a number of very lucrative programs for coaches, faculty and departments that happen in the summer. In most cases those programs provide more money per day than teaching undergrads in other quarters. Those activities augment salaries, balance budgets and, in most cases, strengthen the Stanford brand. For two summers (2020 & 2021) the university will not be able to host those activities, and that will have a financial impact.
Summer 2021 might not have been particularly lucrative for those activities, but for some parts of the university the loss of two summers will blast a big hole in the budget that those students seeking adjustments to their tuition likely will not appreciate.
FWIW - The lack of dorm community life, the elimination of dining hall socialization, the suspension of clubs, parties and other group gatherings would be far more detrimental to the overall campus experience IMHO.
Sure hope it works out, but it looks like it will be a tough year.
