What Phogge said. There's only one time I've ever been physically threatened while cheering for Stanford at an away football game. I was in Norman in 1984 to watch Stanford play the Sooners. My friend and I were sitting in a section of mostly OU fans, but since everyone was wearing red we kind of blended in. All was well during the national anthem. I sang along and a senior citizen sitting in front of me turned around and complimented me on my voice. As the game started, though, we stood out as we politely applauded when things went well for Stanford--which wasn't too often. The senior citizen turned around and told me that she would "rip my hands off" if I continued to cheer for Stanford. I could tell that the folks around her had her back, so my friend and I cheered silently for the rest of the game. I'm not sure if they were still sore after the 31-14 whipping in 1980 by John Elway and company, or maybe that's how they treated all visitors during the Barry Switzer era.
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
