The Polo Grounds had that cut out in CF that led to the clubhouse steps (the spot where Ralph Branca sat for awhile in uniform after The Shot......). The LA Coliseum had the Moon Shot 248’ LF fence but tons of room in right center, a 50’s Triples Alley. Also early on the outfielders played much more shallow because of the dead ball. Tris Speaker played so shallow in CF that he made a number of unassisted double plays. I still think the triple is baseball’s most exciting base hit.
BC, will work on your question over coffee a little later. A good one.

Watching a fleet runner hit second and churn for third while a RF with a strong takes aim is the most exciting play in baseball. I have a friend who once asked how exciting I thought it would be if they went back to the dead ball and got rid of the fences. Problem is you’d still have a boatload of strikeouts and walks. So to really make it work you would have to move the mound back a bit – or just go back to a flat mound. Now that would be interesting to see. Games also be played in about two hours as opposed to 3 1/2.
I am of the mind that the rise in “three true outcomes“ is ruining baseball. A couple years ago I went to a Giants- Dodgers game. It was an anomaly in that there were very few strikeouts. The ball was put in play by both teams all game long. There were numerous sparkling defensive plays – particularly by the Dodgers outfielders. It was a thoroughly enjoyable game. Of course the Giants won. Otherwise it would’ve sucked!
