I’m starting to wonder if DUO is just not the right blocking scheme for Stanford.

The UCLA players just went through the gaps untouched in may cases. We seemed to have no plan on stopping that, as if the line just didn't feel the need. I would have possibly expected lots of holding penalties as players tried desperately to restrain the guy who was going by them, but we didn't even get that. It was more "That isn't my job" it seemed.

Way too much to expect, and it can get worse if you have a QB that gets "happy feet" from being hit too much. Our OL should be better than this. We probably don't have lots of quickness, but we should be able to push some piles forward. Seems we can't do that either.

UCLA is not, not even close. They have major issues. That makes our loss even harder to take. We were in the game with them even when we didn't have any offense at all in the first half. The UCLA pass defense is suspect. We passed well against them. Fresno did also. DTR is not a good passer. He misses lots of receivers. When UCLA is playing a defense that can't stop the run, that doesn't matter. At the CFP level, they can stop the run and will dare DTR to beat them in the air. He can't.

Obviously, the rest of the season will demonstrate the reality of the situation, one way or the other. UCLA isn't CFP class IMHO, but is a fair to good team. That may be enough to win the South as nobody in that division has looked real great this year.

Oregon had a hard time stopping the run last night too. They gave up over 200 yards rushing to the 15-game-winless Arizona Wildcats last night in Eugene. Actually, AZ outgained OR with 435 total yards and probably would have beat the Ducks if they wouldn't have given up 5 turnovers. Yes, net FIVE giveaways.

I've rarely seen any coach as angry as Cristobal after a celebrating wide receiver spun the ball on the ground for a taunting penalty and cost them a chance at a field goal at the end of the first half. He smashed a headset and for a second I thought he was going to hit him. Maybe he'll read them the riot act and if they play to their potential it won't be good news for us.[/quote]
Yet the Ducks still won the game by 22 points.
The only game I've seen them in is Ohio State. They beat the Buckeyes in Columbus with two of their best defensive players out with injuries. If OSU is anywhere near as good a team as they are supposed to be, the Ducks certainly looked like a playoff team in that one.

If Oregon goes 12-1 they should be in unless there are enough undefeated P5 schools to bump them out (I don't expect that is probable). I think Oregon could possible do it, but as others have pointed out they usually have at least one bad game and sometimes more. I would guess UCLA isn't in the running for a 1 loss season. Not CFP, but not chopped liver either. OTOH, I can also see UCLA going 7-5.

The DL play was not unexpected but so disheartening. It seemed like the yards gained after first contact was 4 or 5 yards for UCLA RBs, while Stanford RBs were immediately overwhelmed by three or more defenders at the line of scrimmage if not in the backfield.

Those of us that predicted 5, 6 or 7 wins for Stanford probably suspected the team would be 2-3, at best, after 5 games. So the team is pretty much on course for the 6 or 7 win season IMHO.

LoL. I was thinking about BC's post as I read yours. My take - its the NO blocking scheme. Good heavens, how many times was Peat tackled before he could even see the corner, let alone turn up-field? Seemed like our OLs primary mission was running to the pile after a TFL.
How hard is it to just block any defender after missing your assignment? Back in the day, missing a block was egregious but was nothing compared to not blocking at all. :(
