Really?  I just don’t find marching band tributes to anyone all that good.  For one, they basically all sound the same. The Ohio State band’s tribute to Rush sounds indistinguishable from the Cal band’s tribute to the temptations which sounds identical to USC’s tribute to the music of Star Wars.  Secondly, I can think of nothing that seems more antithetical to the spirit of Rush than to be played by the OSU band.

That’s not meant to downplay the musicianship or the formations.  Nor do I mean this to devolve into a diatribe on why the LSJUMB, whose humor I have outgrown, is better than all these fuddy duddy marching bands.  But honestly, when a marching band performs a tribute to something, it just doesn’t resonate with me, even if I like the underlying material.

Rush was my first "real" concert. June 27, 1990 at Shoreline. Saw them 7 times and wish it was more.

Traditional marching bands playing rock tributes always sound like Pat Boone doing covers of soul/R&B songs to me; it takes the heart and soul out of them.  The work put into some of the shows is amazing but the music is boring and, if it is rock that I like, often maddening.  LSJUMB, back when it still had enough members to actually play some songs, was much better than most, but they are not a traditional marching band.  Some other non-traditional bands, see some of the HBCU bands, play in a more rock/soul style that sounds less like elevator music.

Agree 100%. When the Stanford band has enough members, they sound like a rock 'n roll band - I haven't been to a game at Maples for a few years, but my guess is the band still may have enough members to rock the house. And, they've always played with soul...vs traditional marching bands that indeed sound more like elevator music. Look at it this way: compare the Stanford band's version of All Right Now to the USC's band's version.

Agree 100%. My only complaint about a band like OSU's is that I wish the conducting was done by a drum major instead of a director. They put on a great show, and don't sound anything like elevator music to my ears.  Funny how the crowd seems to mostly love the formations that look like people.  I would have been losing my mind over the drum break, personally.

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed watching the performance with my band member daughter who was even more impressed.  The execution and artistry is superb and highly entertaining.

On the other hand she didn't recognize "Tom Sawyer" until I fed her the title.  Doubtlessly I'm more familiar with Rush than she is but their music doesn't translate well to marching band tribute arrangements.  (And I prefer the LSJUMB arrangement of "Limelight", at least when done at basketball games-I'm afraid they no longer have the ooomph (technical term) to make it work on Saturday afternoons.

I wish LSJUMB/Incomparables would improve the script writing for their field shows, lately they reek of privileged kid snark, and I'm a long-time band defender.  Can we call Hal Mickelson out of retirement or get his grandson to apply?

I don't know how many people reading this thread know, but the Limelight performance and the motorcycle formation chokes up and/or brings tears to the eyes of Rush fans.

It's in honor of the creative genius behind Rush, drummer Neil Peart. In the late 1990s he lost his wife and daughter to a car crash. To cope with the twin tragedies he stopped playing music and went on a motorcycle ride by himself around North America that resulted in a book called Ghost Rider. The motorcycle formation during the Limelight section connects the dots between a song about being uncomfortable with attention brought on by being a popular entertainer, with the fact Peart went on the motorcycle to seek solitude to heal himself. Pretty powerful for the OSU band to include that reference on the field.

There are only two people who have died whom I didn't know personally that made me cry when I learned of their death because they had such a great impact on my life. The first was Bill Walsh. The second was Neil Peart. Hard to imagine there being anyone else. The fact Peart died of Glioblastoma brain cancer - that also killed a good friend of mine a year earlier - is a cruel irony given what a brilliant mind he had.

There are other bands I like a lot. There are other super talented musicians. However, I don't know if there can ever be a more musically talented trio of smart, humble, likable people, who make better music, with more chemistry and thoughtful words to their songs. I would many times break out laughing at the absurdity of how three guys could create the amazing sound I was hearing at Rush shows.

I've watched the Rush doc Beyond the Lighted Stage probably a dozen times now and never tire of it. Every time it puts a smile on my face and it always will.
