Quote: the Oregon offensive line struggled in the first half against Washington State, which used a 3-4 more extensively than it had most of the season. A year ago, the Ducks lowest offensive output was at California, which also used a 3-4.
There have been times this season when new center Hroniss Grasu in particular has been unsettled by a 3-4, in which a nose guard is lined up directly in front of him; in some cases, Grasus snaps seemed to lack their usual zip. But UO coach Chip Kelly said hes been pleased with his redshirt freshmans progress.
That would seem to bode well for us--except when we go nickel, in which we typically have a four-man front with Chase Thomas putting his hand on the ground. Maybe using more of a 3-3 nickel would be more productive (as OutsiderFan observed).
Either the 4-2-5 (see Terry's) or 3-3-5 (above, etc.) would help with TE, slot, & outside assignments, but the Ducks trap well & frequently inside, pulling center and guards either way. If the front 6 can control those we'd look good, but if James or Barner gets through the first level consistently we'd be in trouble.
