There were some OL who clearly disliked the guy.

Then again, tough coaching can be masked/brushed off/excused when the W column has a nice fat number. But when it doesn't? (Ask Jones and Peat about coach Gould...)

Montgomery was noted for his prickly personality, which probably carried over to his coaching. Never met Wiggin, but I always saw him described as the consummate gentleman, which led me to suspect that perhaps his problem was that he was too nice a guy and not demanding enough of his assistant coaches and players.

It is interesting to contrast the responses here to reports of this coach, versus the responses on this board to reported complaints about Molly Goodenbour at USF.

I would not excuse any coach for any of their behaviors towards their players.  I didn't experience jerks as coaches, nor did I go through boot camp or other experience where anything goes in terms of making you do something.  Where being a jerk turns into being an abuser is a wide gray line.

I'm guessing that when Latrell Sprewell choked P.J. Carlesimo, it wasn't the first time someone wanted to do that to PJ.  I think Isaiah Rider and Rod Strickland had legendary altercations with him.

While I do remember that anecdote too, I wouldn't call rushing for 8 YPC and putting up 62 points "Stanford's OL struggling." It was one player in particular after he had a bad series, IIRC.
