We are down by 1 point at the half, 26-27. Our shooting got somewhat better in the second quarter (we are up to 37% shooting), but our offense still lacks purpose and confidence. It was Haley's ability to break down her defender that kept us in plus a few more paint points and a critical Jump three pointer.
On defense, Fudd was forced to the bench with two fouls but Westbrook picked up the slack and contributed with 3 three-pointers in the first half. We've done a reasonably good job at Bueckers, she's 4/8 and 0/1 from the three point line; she's going to get her points, she's just too good. We just need to deny her the ball as much and make others beat her.
I am disappointed that we did not do a better job capitalizing on the two fouls on each of UConn's remaining bigs - Edwards and Nelson-Ododa. This is exactly what we wanted, given Juhasz's season-ending injury, they are thin at the post and we haven't exploited our size difference in the paint as much as we should have.
We need to be more confident - as Haley pointed out in her halftime courtside interview, they are not playing Stanford basketball on the offensive end, but finding the silver lining, we are only down 1 despite our poor offensive performance in the first half.
We must try to attack the paint, either continual attacks off the bounce by Haley or Lexie, especially to draw fouls or get it inside to Brink, Belibi or even Iriafen, much more in the second half.
Defensively, just play aggressive defense, especially on the UConn guards. If you give Bueckers, Fudd or Westbrook any space, they will make you pay. Make UConn's bigs take the shots.
