He was extremely rude when he didn't have to be after 2/3 of the staff and roster eagerly cooperated. I respect a "no" to a request (except when my crew was with Mike Wallace on an ambush) but not one so vicious.

Bonds was much worse, even if you weren't shooting him.

Apropos of nothing, but until I read Howard Bryant's bio of Rickey Henderson, I had no idea that Billy Martin was such a world-class, vindictive a-hole. I mean I knew he had the reputation of being a jerk and a nasty drunk, but he took it to a whole other level.

Keith Jackson a class act, especially when he declined to broadcast the usc-ucla game which was the abc game of the week on the west coast over the Stanford-Cal game back in 1999, in which a Stanford win sent the Cards to the Rose Bowl.  Plus, I think one of his kids attended Stanford.

My youth was spent with Lon Simmons and Bill King on a transistor radio. I definitely appreciated Scully, too.  You could often get Dodger games on the AM radio all the way up here in the Bay Area, and I had nothing else to do in the summers back then, so I listened once in a while.  Sadly, they have all passed.  

With the proliferation of media choices and television, the role of the baseball radio announcer has diminished.  I don't think people will ever have the same kind of relationship with baseball announcers as they once did.

We are lucky to have great announcers for the Giants, although I never listen anymore.  Jon Miller is the best announcer still around and one of the best ever. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Miller flattered Scully frequently and hilariously.  These get me every time.
