The ESPN article said the cause wasn't known, and doesn't mention whether he had COVID or any vaccination in the recent past.
Having had COVID recently is a known risk for such strokes. (Most studies I found about COVID-vaccine-related strokes were related to the AstraZeneca and J&J vaccines, not widely used in the US. One paper that includes mRNA vaccine presents some risk numbers and a conclusion: "The risks of most of these [haematological and vascular] events were substantially higher and more prolonged after SARS-CoV-2 infection than after vaccination in the same population.")
The bivalent mRNA vaccines were approved August 31 as booster shots, so he could have taken advantage of such a vaccine in the 7 weeks before his stroke. North Carolina reports 4-6% of all ER visits during Sep & October were for COVID symptoms. Neither can be discounted without more specific knowledge of his situation.
