If all a player is going to get is $10,000 the 4 and 5 star kids will not be impressed and likely go elsewhere.  Participating and competing are two different things.  Stanford's so-called 40 year decision pitch no longer holds much water for most of the top kids coming out of high school.

The "40 year decision pitch" was never going to work for top kids unless they were "self selectors," which has always been the case even before the NIL cat was let out of the bag.

Having a really good football team for a little while made it more palatable for a recruit to "self select."

Totally agree. It was always the case. The "40 year decision" is important to a few "self selectors" and not to "the rest". No amount of "selling" by the staff will fundamentally change that.
