In the annals of rowing, the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race (aka "The Boat Race") is one of, if not the oldest, intercollegiate sporting events in history. (The Harvard-Yale race is the oldest intercollegiate sporting event in US history.) As such, it has attracted a number of strong elite and pre-elite rowers from across the world looking to make their mark while studying for a graduate degree, although the priorities sometimes run the other way around. The 2023 Boat Race represents the 168th contest between Oxford and Cambridge, which has been held continuously with the exception of the time during the First and Second World Wars.
Over the years, a number of top Stanford rowers have studied at the Oxbridge universities and earned seats in the Boat Race. This year, Nick Mayhew '22 represents Stanford in the Boat Race having earned a seat in Cambridge's top men's boat through months of grueling training and selection.
This year's race was contested today, and I invite you to watch the race (linked below) if you have about 20-25 min to spare. It was quite an exciting race, and I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.
