Ugly, ugly home loss in straight sets to #7 Pepperdine, a team that was theoretically Stanford's equal.  Losses were 25-19, 25-16 and 25-22.

Stanford hit .317. Pepperdine hit .571. I don't think I've ever seen a team hit as well against Stanford. Terrible defense. Stanford's libero Lui got ZERO digs in three games. The Cardinal rested some pin hitters and started several backups (Luke Turner, Ethan Will, Alex Rottman) who predictably hit a collective .154.

Hopefully the starters are back in full at 5 p.m. tonight at Maples. This should be a more competitive match.

That's pretty astounding the libero didn't get one dig in the match.  I can't recall watching a match where that happened but I'm guessing it does occur. A little surprising pin hitters were rested unless they are dinged up. In club, teams play three and sometimes four matches in one day at tournaments.

Scores were 20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 15-12. Hitting % was almost identical, .389 for Stanford and .387 for Pepperdine. Biggest difference was service errors with 26 by Pepperdine and 15 by Standford. Stanford had more ace (8-4), blocks (10-5).

Looking at the stats for each set, Stanford played miserably in the first set and then flipped a switch. Stanford's hitting percentage numbers for each set were .100, .423, .524, .345 and .667. The hitting percentage numbers for Pepperdine were much more even: .444, .433, .312, .324, .412.

Twenty years ago or so there was a guy on the team named Paul Bocage. Nice guy, and a good player, but when he served it always seemed as though either he would serve an ace or he would serve it into the next zip code. Ever since, if someone sends a serve way out of bounds, my husband and I call it “a Bocage.”

Stanford had 34 total errors in five sets, that's pretty darned good. Pepperdine had 54 errors. Maybe it was resting Stanford's starters yesterday, but that is a brobdingnagian disparity.  I don't mind service errors, because I like service aces, and I like difficult passes. I also like the different kinds of serves that are made, like a baseball pitcher's repertoire. Still, 26 service errors is Pepperdine's season high. They actually had considerably fewer service errors per set earlier in the season, but the quality of opponent is getting better, ergo...

BTW, former Stanford player Jaylen Jasper had a great weekend for Pepperdine, especially on Friday. Meanwhile, Stanford's libero had six digs in five sets. Why so low? So did Pepperdine's libero, but he's fairly marginal (three receiving errors).

Stanford split with #13 USC last weekend. They won the first set, 3-1, in a very exciting match, 25-22, 24-26, 25-16 and 25-20. Most of the pin hitters did well, Lamp hit .346, RS/Oppo Snoey hit .294 (not bad for a frosh), but Will Rottman is still suffering, hitting just .226. Lui back with 7 digs, samee as Snoey who had two service aces and just one service error. Rottman had six service errors and just once ace. Lietzke set well with 43 assists, and 5 digs. Stanford never trailed during the match.

USC's oppo, Simon Gallas was exceptional, and they have a pretty good frosh outside in Dillon Klein.

USC outlasted Stanford in Saturday's match, 3-2, with scores of 19-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-22 and 15-17. Lui was Stanford's best, with 12 digs and seven assists. MB Ethan Hill had no errors for the second straight match, and the other middle Nathan Gates hit .444 with a block.

Tomorrow night at 5 p.m., Stanford plays $14 CSU Northridge and plays #6 UC Irvine on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Stanford lost in straight sets both yesterday to #14 Northridge (25-20, 25-24 and 26-24) and earlier today to #6 UC Irvine (25-17, 25-23, 25-22). Irvine had just 21 errors, Stanford had 36. They had nine receiving errors, which is inexcusable in a three-set match. Irvine only served nine aces with 8 errors, they weren't serving that hard. Theo Snoey hit -.273, that's three kills and six errors in 11 attempts -- yeesh.  Happily, Rottman returned to form, hit .472.

Against Northridge, Stanford had even more errors, 38 errors in a three-set match.  Northridge had 31, characteristic of the #14 team, but Stanford gave it to them. Northridge had only five hitting errors, hitting an astounding .474. They put on a clinic -- tried to give it back with 18 service errors, but Stanford obliged with 19 service errors. And Kevin Lamp hit .160.

UCLA at Burnham in two weeks, 3/17 and 3/18.  They're only 17-1, and have only lost eight sets all year, three of them on the road at Penn State. Good luck, Stanford...

As a reminder, the former Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, unwieldy with 11 men's volleyball teams, has now split into two leagues; the MPSF and the Big West. Concordia plays in the MPSF with UCLA, Grand Canyon, BYU, Pepperdine, Stanford and USC (which is the current order by W/L record). The Big West is UC-Irvine, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Northridge State, UC San Diego, and UC-Santa Barbara.

Point is, Concordia is legit, and they beat the #12 team in the country recently, Loyola of Chicago.

Anyway, Stanford acquitted themselves well. Stanford hit a season best .478 as a team, and held Concordia to a .074 hitting clip. Stanford also had a season high 12 blocks, leading to Stanford's best defense of the season. Lietzke had 37 assists, Justin Lui had eight digs and four assists.
