The risk of CTE in football is extremely high. No way around it. There is also data showing cognitive function is affected long before CTE kicks in.

There must be what, several hundred thousand former college football players? Maybe millions? It should be pretty feasible to determine prevalence of dementia or other neurological sequelae in this population matched against controls.
Would be more useful IMHO than these uncontrolled histology studies that seem to be most commonly in the news when it comes to CTE.
My mother was was fluent and intelligible at 85. At 91 she is not. Just because someone seems okay today doesn’t mean they will stay that way.
