Apologies if it has already been posted. CAPER (The Committee on Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation), which is made up of faculty students and staff, put out the following statement:
CAPER's Statement
Not surprisingly, they make the case for continued involvement in collegiate athletics. I don't have an issue with it per se, but while they recognize that "For the university, college athletics has changed markedly in recent years, and in ways that create meaningful new challenges and opportunities for Stanford," but while they argue "We should not set aside our identity and core values as we meet those challenges" they don't seem to acknowledge that some of the challenges may be anathema to "our identity and core values". What to do if the two become impossible to reconcile is unaddressed.
