The most painful losses for me were the Oregon games that cost a shot at a title. Even the 2015 Northwestern loss, which in retrospect also kept Stanford out of the playoff. The 2005 Davis game wasn't even the most painful loss that year. That honor goes to the UCLA loss. There were three losses that were winnable games in 2005 - Davis, UCLA, and ND; which could have meant a nine-win season and maybe Harris survives the 1-11 aftermath, or doesn't even have the 1-11 aftermath. The ND loss was excruciating if I remember right (and I might not), but was mitigated by getting to beat the shit out of the old stadium on our way out, with excavators lining up to do it for real. That was a cool stunt, by the way.
I think this year's loss probably cements 1-11, but 2-10 is the same, Sac State is better than Stanford, and this is no more surprising than had Stanford won. Just keep telling myself to be patient with the regime in an era where patience seems really optional. Frankly, I wanted Colorado State to win more than I cared about Stanford, because my Buff alum sister was at Folsom wearing the green and orange since her husband is now a department chair in Ft. Collins. I also want to see how Prime handles a loss, but the difference in attitude between Boulder and Palo Alto is on par with the difference in altitude. Nothing like complete roster turnover, which would help Stanford and Taylor, but ain't gonna happen.
And to bury a question: what if most of the Stanford team portals on out of here? Is one for one replacement allowed, or are there maxima per class or per total roster?
