Doesn't surprise me. California Baptist University in Riverside is a school on an athletic mission, so to speak. My son's D1 college volleyball team played them when they were an NAIA power in 2011. They had mainly foreign, 25 year old students from their respective country All-Star teams. They dropped men's volleyball somewhere along the way to joining the NCAA D1. Too bad, they were terrific, and they are in the middle of the high school boys' volleyball hotbed.

CBU dominated the NAIA from 1969 through joining the NCAA DII in 2013. For the next five years, they qualified 70% of their eligible teams for the NCAA postseason, steadily climbing the DII Learfield Directors' Cup rankings where they debuted at #26 in their first year and climbed to 16th, 4th and 2nd until they won the D2 Directors Cup in 2017/2018.

In 2019, they transitioned to the NCAA Division 1. They're members of the WAC, a conference of small-ish schools, mainly religious, that dropped football in 2013 when their football-playing conference members bolted to other conferences. 18 of their 20 intercollegiate sports compete in the NCAA. Their enrollment has grown from 4,000 in 2009 to 11,580 today. Academically, they're considered similar to the lower-end CSUs.

The director's cup projection guy agrees with you, with a projected 100 point Texas victory, but a Texas softball loss and Stanford win today would halve that projection. Golf is another potential swing (no pun intended)

I don't totally agree with their *choices* of core sports, but when Texas does considerably better than Stanford at football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, and women's volleyball - all among the biggest sports in the country - it's kind of hard to argue with the notion that they have the nation's best athletics program.

Is women's volleyball really among the biggest sports in the country?   I realize WVB packs the house in ~10 programs, but at the upcoming Olympics women's volleyball will not be a ratings favorite.   There really isn't a WVB pro league here in the USA, and outside of those ~10 programs most schools don't have anyone watching games.  If WVB why not reference Title IX and bring in MVB?

When the Sears' cup was originally launched there were core sports too, but the idea is so flawed.

In the BigTen ice hockey is easily bigger than anything other than football, WVB and basketball.
In the mid-Atlantic states Lacrosse is easily bigger than anything other than football and basketball.
Almost every school in the USA has a track & field team and no championship event has more schools than track & field.
Globally soccer is rather key and the USWNT is pretty popular and is loaded with women that attended D1 schools.

It is a bit like Olympic medal tallies IMHO.   No doubt that in recent years China has won quite a lot of medals in sports that other nations don't really care much about, but at the end of the day the Olympic medal tallies don't give bonus points for popular, original or core sports.

It would be crazy for the IOC to release a tally of overall medal winners and then create an Olympic Cup prioritizing core sports swimming, track and field, wrestling and weightlifting....or worse removing track and field and adding table tennis so that one key country could get a boost.  

Wish the NACDA would tally the full list since most of the sports cost less to operate than securing a 5-star HS prospect now.
