I was surprised at first, and a little concerned, but then when I thought about it, I didn’t think TT’s decision was unreasonable. With all  the changes in what it means to be a “senior,” I think it’s reasonable to redefine it as “using one’s last year of eligibility.”

I actually thought it was weird that people could get two senior days. It’s a special day for the end of your collegiate career.

I would let those expected to graduate in June walk if they want to even if they have eligibility remaining

If you walk as a senior and come back as a fifth year, you don't walk a second time.

I don't agree. I think it is much more reasonable to define it as the year you receive your undergraduate degree. That may be compatible with what TT has said: "But if you have eligibility left, unless somebody comes to me, I’m assuming they’re gonna be back to play for the Card.”

One would hope TT is close enough to his players to know who intends to graduate and who intends to stay for a fifth year without graduating. I would expect he has talked already to the guys he wants back just to ensure they know it. Maybe TT needs to help them get into a Stanford graduate program. He shouldn't have to "assume" anything. However, TT seems to be saying that if you tell him you are graduating, you can walk. 

There are always going to be players who "redshirted" their freshman year simply because they weren't good enough to play. Preventing these players from having a senior walk because they are graduating in four years makes no sense at all, even if they have eligibility left. If that isn't the case, it is IMO a big problem.

But I also fear what the article pointed out (there are games left in the season and you’ve told coach you won’t be back next year), I hope TT doesn’t lose the locker room over this. Fingers crossed.

My opinion is that college athletics should be for undergrads only.  Once you graduate, you're done.  It is ridiculous that there are so many athletes stringing out their college careers to 6+ years now and these guys and gals are supposedly in "graduate school".  What a bunch of baloney!

Don't know what the policy has been in the past, but I agree with those who think "Senior Day" should pertain to academic standing.  "Student-athletes", right? One senior day based on pending receipt of degree.
Hmmm, does Stanford still have the 5-year engineering masters program?  Would that impact any football players?  I wish I had known about that program when I enrolled in 1972, but I thought engineers had something to do with trains...lol.  I was really, really good at math and a little socially inept, would've fit right in.
BTW, I've always disliked the designations, "redshirt freshman", "true freshman", etc.  Why not just "1st year player", "2nd year player," etc.?

I am completely out of touch on this one and would have guessed that it wouldn't really be that big of a deal for players to be recognized on Senior Day. 

But I'm not paid like TT is to have a feel for the little things that matter a great deal to the players. It is also probably a travel concern for some parents who maybe had been planning a trip for months.

I'm guessing that other Stanford sports also have Senior Days and follow the convention of honoring players in their fourth year of eligibility?

Yes, if they have done the work and walked the walk and are graduating, even with eligibility left, they deserve the Senior day.  The idea that you go to college to get a degree and go on to do whatever it is you want to do is basically the Universities purpose. 
I would even have said that when MOC graduated in three years and went on to play basketball elsewhere, he deserved a senior day.
