I was watching the CWC game between Benfica and Bayern and, during a water break, I thought I saw a player dunk his hands into a tub of ice water. This reminded me that some 10-15 yrs ago, I saw Stanford football players use this device where a player inserted his hand into a glove-like thing and it cooled his blood. I don't recall seeing this device in general use nowadays. Was this an invention that ended up not panning out?

You're referring to the cooling glove developed by Craig Heller in Biology. Not sure how widely it was adopted commercially. I participated in a lab trial early on in that research project when I was still doing a lot of long distance cycling - nothing like having a thermometer tube inserted in your nose and down your throat to measure your core body temp while peddling away on an exercise bike in a converted lab cold room!

I remember that at least 22 year ago at Stanford.  I think it had a brief moment in the NFL?  But there were a few people who swore by it.  I would guess now that this has more effective benefits if you're training outdoors in warmer climates.
