Stanford announced late last year that it was withdrawing its participation and interest in a New York City campus, an initiative still pursued by several eastern universities. But that doesn't mean all opportunities for imperialist expansion have gone away.
On the front page of the local (Alabama) Huntsville Times was a story about a state legislator who is spearheading an effort to take the Univ. of Alabama Huntsville out of the UA system. Grievances range from favoritism by the UA board for the main Tuscaloosa campus, moving existing research programs to Tuscaloosa and opening up a development office to draw new Redstone Arsenal and Marshall Space Flight Center programs and research dollars to Tuscaloosa. Â
The legislator thinks UAH would be better off on its own, even if that meant taking the university private. His first choice: Stanford, which he says is 'looking for opportunities to expand." Hmmmm. I wonder if the students at Stanford in Huntsville will have as much fun as I did at Stanford in Germany.
