From my one trip to a game in SB two years ago, I recall that not only did local hotels in SB require two nights stay, but the room rates were jacked up a great deal for weekends with domer home games. Unless you really want to be in or very near SB, you will find a nicer hotel in Chicago for much less.Â
If you stay in Chicago, remember that SB is in Eastern time zone whereas Chicago is Central time.Â
We stayed in Chicago and drove a rental car, which worked out just fine. If you have time, see the sights on campus. We found people on campus to be extremely welcoming and friendly. In addition to official parking, people sell parking spots in vacant lots, front lawns and such.
I would expect there will be a Stanford alumni association tailgater on campus. If you buy tix through Stanford you will probably get an email about it at some point. Otherwise, check the alum assoc website a few weeks prior to the game. The tailgater supposedly sold out two years ago. I also understand in some prior years the chicago alumni association arranged a special train from the city, but they did not do so two years ago. In any case, I have traveled to several away games in the past two years and I would always advise checking the alumni assoc website for game day events.
If you don't go to the tailgater, various student groups sell burgers around campus prior to the game. There is also a small relatively new shopping/eating/drinking area just south of campus.
