Montgomery, like Tedford before him, has been what we in the business call "Cal'd."Â
To be Cal'd means the institutional lack of caring about winning takes away the accountability to win games from football and men's hoops coaches, who without any expectations, get comfortable with being mediocre. "You went 6-6, that's OK, you still went to a bowl game and we didn't have anybody get arrested on the team this year." "You finished 2nd in the Pac-12 and made it to the NCAA tournament, awesome! We can look past the fact you got thumped in the tournament, have absolutely zero chance of winning a title, and are failing to land any top Bay Area talents, because nobody was arrested for stealing a laptop."
I just saw Tedsel say "we hope to make a another step forward in a few years," when Ted Miller asked him about being on the hot seat. And Monty loses two players that would have provided depth on a team with no depth. He's a great coach, but he doesn't like playing the AAU games it takes to recruit the talent to win basketball games in the Pac-12. He also employs his son as an assistant, rather than a balls to the wall recruiter.
Cal football and men's hoops are a total and complete temple to mediocrity. Monty has simply succumbed to the gravitational pull of it.
