NEWARK — Newark Mayor Cory Booker was taken to a hospital tonight for treatment of smoke inhalation he suffered trying to rescue his next-door neighbors from their burning house.

"I just grabbed her and whipped her out of the bed," Booker said in recounting the fire. Booker told The Star-Ledger he also suffered second-degree burns on his hand...

One always wonders what one would do in an emergency. We like to think the best but we never really know until in the situation. Most freeze or would not get involved, certainly when risking one's life. It's not a political fabricated moment or part of a PR image campaign - he had to make a decision in a split second and he chose to help a neighbor. We want and need leaders like that.

One always wonders what one would do in an emergency. We like to think the best but we never really know until in the situation. Most freeze or would not get involved, certainly when risking one's life. It's not a political fabricated moment or part of a PR image campaign - he had to make a decision in a split second and he chose to help a neighbor. We want and need leaders like that.

The comments in the article on nj.com were illuminating  as well. It gives an indication of the political environment he is in. Imagine people thinking this was a political stunt!

I am not certain how effective of a politician he is, but he is certainly one that I would have a hard time not voting for.

If the four of us are walking home over the bridge and a person was drowning, would we have the nerve...Would one of us have the nerve to dive into the icy water and save them?

It's a key question.

l, of course, can't swim, so I never have to face it.

Personal courage is wonderful, but it's far from the most important criterion in picking political leaders. Courage in the pursuit of bad policy can look an awful lot like stubbornness. Audie Murphy and Alvin York were great heroes, but they wouldn't necessarily have made great presidents.

Douglas MacArthur was a great yet foolhardy general who would've been a disastrous president.

Character, including courage, takes time and a track record to reveal themselves. The public narrative can be shaped and managed but living with someone gives you real insight. Glad to hear he's the "real deal."
