Stanford senior offensive guard Andrew Phillips\' father was killed in the Alaskan plane crash that also took the life of several others, including former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.    Phillips\' brother was also on the flight but reportedly survived.

Sad news, indeed. I met Mr. Phillips after one of the games a couple years ago. He and his wife tried to attend as many games as they could. Here\'s the LA Times story about Steven, with a mention of Bill Phillips and his son, Willy (who survived).

Sad indeed, and not just for Stanford--  Phillips had two other sons playing college football;

Three of Phillips\' sons play football at NCAA FBS schools. Andrew Phillips is a fifth-year senior and starting guard at Stanford, where he was named second-team All-Pac 10 last season.

Colter Phillips is a sophomore tight end at Virginia, where he had five catches for 34 yards in six starts in 2009.

Paul Phillips is a freshman tight end at Indiana.

...I don\'t know if there is anybody better than Harbaugh at setting the tone and expressing the heart of the mindset.   Which, is pretty much what you\'d expect growing up in a tight family that made football their choice in life.

"A sudden, tragic death is the toughest to grieve and you never know how long it\'s going to take. Bill lived a life any man would be proud to have lived. His legacy lives on in his sons."

Also this tidbit that gives some insight into the physical and mental toughness that characterizes the sons.  Not only are three of them playing in Div. 1 ball,  but the youngest Phillips\' brother, Willie, survived the crash with a broken ankle. The 13-year-old also heroically ran up the mountain to flag down the rescue plane.
