So what really is the "normal" time frame for an AD search? Coaching searches have well-defined annual activities that suffer greatly if you don't find one in a reasonable amount of time. But ADs... could an institution go an arbitrary amount of time without one (in the absence of, say, a high-profile coaching hire gated by the lack of an AD)?

I read up a bit on Bernard Muir, and when he left Georgetown, there was informed chatter that his relationship with the Georgetown president had become strained after he interviewed for the AD jobs at Duke and Northwestern.
Jamie Z. is a '93 Stanford grad who did marketing for the men's basketball program during the late 90s, when it was admittedly a lot easier to market Stanford hoops than it has been in recent years.
Both Muir and Zaninovich are in their early 40s. Based just on a surface look at their resumes, both seem likely to be good fits at Stanford.

I may be wrong, but I think it is a brobdingnagian mistake to hire an AD without experience working in a big time college football program. That would mean Pac-12, Big 12, Big "Ten", SEC, and ACC. I loved the Bowlsby hire because he came from Iowa, a school that may not be a football power, but puts a high priority on it and routinely sells out its stadium. It seemed likely Stanford football would be strong under his watch, and it was.
Just having the mindset that football is important, and experience knowing how it fits in on campus and in the community, seems to me to be a very important qualifier for any BCS school AD job, and in particular Stanford, a place where its importance has historically been allowed to wane.
