Stanford\'s #2 women\'s team starts off the season on a truly tough roadie, but today managed to hang on for a 2-2 tie against #1 North Carolina in Chapel Hill. They are now 1-0-2 on the season, having tied at #7 Boston College 1-1 (despite dominating the game, due to a terrific job by BC\'s All-American keeper, who had 10 saves). Â They beat Boston University 2-1, not a bad road win against a good small conference team (the Terriers won the America East last year).
Today\'s game was a nailbiter. Â Stanford took the lead against the Tar Heels for the first time in team history in the first half on a goal from Christen Press, but gave up an equalizer 5 minutes into the second. Â They then retook the lead 2-1 on a Teresa Noyola header over UNC\'s small keeper, only to give it back when three defenders went ball against the Tar Heels\' most threatening player, Ohai, leaving another player with space at the top of the box. Â Both teams came close, and Stanford had the better of play, but 2 OTs couldn\'t settle things.
The road continues against the #25 Dukies on Sunday.
Stanford will be a very good team this year, but their alternate year schedule is hellish. Â This trip, then the three of the four toughest Pac-10 teams, SC, UCLA and UCB, all on the road.
Hopefully, they\'ll figure out a way to get through the Tar Heels later this season.
