Today in opponent attrition: Oregon

Stewart Mandel retweeted from @DuckFootball that redshirt senior OG Carson York is out for the season as well. York has not been listed on the two-deep at all this year for Oregon.

Rob Moseley confirms York out with season ending surgery. Two 5th yr, multi year starters:

Also WR Huff and a couple of other OL knocked out of game, but injuries thought to be less serious.
Boyett will be a serious loss to their pass defense; big hitter with great nose for ball.

I'm no Duck fan, but I hate to see these kids hurt and unable to play. Both Boyett and York were outstanding players. Boyett and Delano Howell play the game the same way. As I recall, York was a guy we recruited pretty hard. I don't think either will have any remaining eligibility. The best to both of them in the future.

Stanfan, I agree with you. As the season progresses and more injuries happen to all the teams, I dread looking at the board and seeing an increasing number of "today in opponent attrition" threads. I wish they could all be consolidated into one long thread, so that the visual focus of a first time poster or a casual lurker should be on our team.

I can't help thinking that the secrecy with which some coaches (both at Stanford and elsewhere) treat injury updates contribute to the increase of injury discussions on the boards. If coaches think that information is of a nature that impacts competitive outcomes, naturally, fans tend to want to know and discuss those.

(The closest thing to an exception would be Scott Fujita's boasts of trying to hurt opponents during pileups, and his call for 59er fans to physically assault the Tree mascot, which have sometimes been reprinted here.) Nobody like injuries, partly because we've had plenty of our own, and partly because decent human beings don't wish serious harm on somebody just for wearing a different colored uniform while playing a game.
But everybody's interested in the relative strength of upcoming opponents, and injuries are part of that. There's also a natural feeling of relief if, for whatever reason, we don't have to face a particularly dangerous opposition player. I think that's totally distinct from rooting for injuries.
I suppose we could always root for academic suspensions, but that doesn't seem very sporting either.

We can root for others to turn pro early. It's good to see athletes anywhere stay to get degrees, but many elsewhere will never finish their degrees anyway.Â
Odds are we have more great athletes who will stay, at least until they get their degrees. Â

If they deserve their suspensions, then I'm all for it.Â
