Some observations and a question about a few guys from Arizona game:

Lyons
After Brown went out, Lyons played a lot, but honestly, I didn't see anything from him that made me think he is as good as David Shaw has suggested.  To me, Terrence Brown is the better player.  Is Lyons still not 100%?

Carrington
He didn't play a lot (just when the 2nd team defense was all in), but he looked much better physically than I remember him being in 2011 when he was in the game.  Perhaps he has improved his flexibility and quickness. 

Peat
Maybe he did, but I do not remember him playing hardly at all against Arizona.  I thought we'd see more and more of Peat as the season progressed.  Does anyone know how many snaps Peat played?

Lyons got beat several times but I think he is a very good CB.

He closes on runs and passes in front of him very quickly and is outstanding in wrapping up and making solo tackles - maybe better than any Stanford DB. At times it looks like his gloves are sticky web fingers that grab a receiver and doesn't let go. And he is very physical in tackling and jamming at the line.

During the game Lyons and Carter looked to get beat several times but when I watched the game on TV it wasn't as clear that many of those plays that they were. Arizona's spread had 4 or 5 WRs and often there were 2 WRs split out wide together (sometimes one behind the other) and sometimes there would be a slot receiver too. We would have one DB - Lyons, Carter, or Browning out wide with the safety deep and near the middle. Sometimes, their would be a nickel or the OLB would line up wide on the slot. Essentially, we would have 1 CB lining up against 2 to 3 WRs. A very tough assignment. Presumably we would be in a zone coverage but Scott's accurate and quick passing was able to find the receiver that was open with 3 receivers in a zone.

After watching the TV I don't think Lyons was beaten badly. He covered pretty well, including the TD, but Scott passed extremely well and Ariz offense is one of the best in the country for a reason.

Also - Lyons has a Skov like attitude and I really like watching him play. I recall Skov as a freshman, with his attitude and enthusiasm but making mistakes. When a CB makes a mistake, even a little one, everyone sees it. When a ILB makes a mistake most people don't even know. To me it seems like Skov has picked the wrong hole to plug a few times which have led to TDs.

btw - Whitfield was in several times throughout the game as a WR. He was #9 but didn't have a name on his jersey and was not listed under that number.

Peat played LT, with Yankey at LG in several non-"bulk" packages... but just about all of them were running plays.  Murphy is the guy I thought I'd see more of by now.  I don't think I've seen him take a snap in a standard package yet?  FWIW, it seemed like Carrington played a fair amount (after Brown went out), though I wouldn't say that he stood out as notably better or worse than his peers.

Peat played LT, with Yankey at LG in several non-"bulk" packages... but just about all of them were running plays.  Murphy is the guy I thought I'd see more of by now.  I don't think I've seen him take a snap in a standard package yet?  FWIW, it seemed like Carrington played a fair amount (after Brown went out), though I wouldn't say that he stood out as notably better or worse than his peers.

Glad to hear Lyons was not happy with his performance.  He was targeted by Arizona and was repeatedly beaten.  Yes, he has attitude, but it's a little hard to watch the swagger and the smack when you are getting beat.  That being said, he's a freshman and he'll be very, very good.  He's was generally in the right area and with his receiver, but was just missing on timing.  He's fast and physical and we now have more athleticism across the d backfield than we have ever had.  How quickly can these guys hit stride is the question.  It was a great tune-up for them in preparation for what the Ducks will throw at us. 

Most concerning to me was the staff's inability to get the defensive sets into the players in time for them to execute on their stunts.  Oregon will be 40-50% faster in getting plays off.  We better start improving that process now or the stunts and reads will be a disaster.

Actually Lyons played only 2 games last season before being injured.  So eligible down the road for a medical redshirt.  So maybe we could call him a Redshirt frosh.
