13 meaty pages of perspective into the NFL as an undrafted free agent. Read it. And then think about all the recent Stanford names who have taken that route into the league. Amazing.

I've always thought at the highest levels of performance - what separates players is not talent, but the mind game. Both in terms of handling the sophistication of the NFL playbook and in mental toughness. I think this explains why Stanford players overacheive.
What do you expect? Our university populates itself with overacheivers in the classrooms and on the field.

As Lombardi put it "the will to win is not nearly so important as the will to prepare to win." There have been several quotes about how Stanford players are among the hardest workers in practice and other off-field preparation. So maybe it's about the work ethic that Stanford players develop by excelling in more than just football while in college and high school (and in many cases, even earlier in life).
