Just spent two hours watching the replay this evening of the Oregon game.  That probably makes at least ten times.  It gets better every time, but I STILL get nervous on the Oregon OT field goal miss and Hogan's fumble.  The totally blank look on Chip Kelly's face after the 3rd down incompletion in OT has got to be one of the top five highlights of the season.

Also, I don't know if someone else has already remarked on this, but watching that missed Oregon field goal in OT reminded me that arguably the three most significant games for Stanford over the past two seasons have all been "decided" by a field goal at the end of the game missing just left -- one against us [Fiesta], and two for us [Oregon and Pac-12 Championship].

The Pac-12 Championship game is being replayed sometime tomorrow, I think.

Some Stanford fans seem to like to excoriate our kicker for his miss in the Fiesta Bowl. Interesting that missed field goals have cost the Ducks two straight undefeated Pac-12 seasons.

I find it amusing that Duck fans are so annoyed/surprised that they don't have a clutch kicker when so many of their other players are top-flight. What, you think a blue chip kicker wants to come to Eugene to sit on the bench and watch their team go for it on 4th and 5 from the 25 yard line? Sure, it's nice to be part of a winning program, but any kicker with dreams of playing in the NFL knows they need to build a body of work in college that proves that can make FGs consistently from 50 yards in, from both hash marks, in all types of game situations.

A week after our Oregon victory I went looking for some Oregon coverage of the game.  On addictedToQuack I found a weekly video blog of two die hard duck fans doing a colorful, pretty knowledgeable show (bedecked in big heavy green jackets and crossing their arms when not gesturing. Must have been out in the garage or something.) anyway, their two sound bites launching their sad segment on the Stanford game were (1) Stanford played a great game and (2) I hate kickers, yep, I agree man, hate them kickers.  These guys had brains, so that made no sense to me. Do they mean the game's rules were changed to remove that position from relevance? How can you hate kickers as a category?  But, those two lost perfect seasons will get you saying things like that I guess. And if your whole game ... Going for it on 4th and 25... Is basically that exact same snub to kickers, then don't be surprised when your kicking game is weak.

All of this is basically to say "yes, exactly" to what farmBoy said.

What that missed kick really showed was how much the Stanford defense forced Oregon to get out of their usual offense and play much more like a conventional offense in the latter part of the game. No going for it on 4th down -- punts and field goal attempts!
