This will be my fourth bowl game in four years. I've found it's much more fun to stay in or very near the team hotel or at one of the official travel package hotels. I did what fullmetal and goodgrief did in Miami Beach - I went over to the Fountainbleu after the Orange Bowl to get my Orange Bowl Champions t-shirt, see the team arrive back from the stadium and run into player's parents. (It was a real highlight to tell Richard Sherman's mom how happy we were to see him grow over the years.) I stayed at the Zona Suites for the Fiesta Bowl, as it was in the same lot as the Fairmont Princess. I was hoping to recreate the postgame celebration the year before. You know the rest of the story, sadly.
I was pretty lucky to get a room through Anthony's travel packages for the Millenium Biltmore. It's another official Stanford fans hotel, is walking distance to the Omni (another official Stanford fan hotel that was sold out) and close enough to the team hotel at the JW Marriott. Another benefit is we will take the Metrolink from Pershing Square to Pasadena. I suspect there'll be lots of Stanford fans on that train, to avoid the parking and traffic hassles.
It'll be a hectic 48+ hrs for me. My resident team will be admitting patients on New Year's Eve. I will stay as late as I can, then fly out to Burbank (I'll probably get to the hotel around 10:30 PM). Someone will cover me Jan 1st, and I have to be back on January 2nd. I had originally booked the latest flight from Burbank to Oakland at 9:10 PM after the game, but had lots of concerns - there's a lot of things that could screw up my getting to the airport in time (like getting my rental car boxed in at the stacked parking on the golf course, and getting into a miserable postgame traffic jam.) After a lot of thought, I realized the smarter thing to do was to book the earliest flight out on January 2nd (means I will have to get up around 4:00 AM to catch it). Will still be a little late to work, but it'll be a little less stress.
Anyone else at the Biltmore or Omni?
