By all accounts, it goes much further than merely being an alum with David Shaw. The Stanford job isn't just his dream -- it's a dream he inherited from his father in many ways. David proposed to his wife at Stanford. And so on. There are a lot of personal connections here that just can't be replicated.
That said, I won't begrudge him if he were to take a much larger sum of money elsewhere as long as he sticks around for at least 5 years or so. I hope he is extremely successful here and stays for the long haul but it's unfair to expect him to make an unwavering long-term commitment without some reciprocity. Stanford doesn't make any commitment beyond the term of the contract to keep him until his kids graduate or anything of the sort.
Personally, I do think Shaw will stick around for at least a few more years. And I have no reason to believe he isn't being honest when he says he wants to stick around for a long time. If he changes his mind, I do think he'll stop saying that. I know coaches don't always speak their mind but I hope this is another aspect where Shaw and Stanford are "different" from the typical coach and institution. So I'm not worrying just yet.
