We had a pre-season thread about predicions, where I'm pretty sure I said we'd go 10-2 with a victory over the team Under Stanford Control. (I missed Oregon, though.) I wonder if anybody can track that one down.

I honestly I can't remember what I voted. If I voted, I was either the only guy who voted for 14 wins, or I voted for 12-13 (and the vote I just now cast for 12-13 doesn't count--I was checking to see if the poll would tell me, "You already voted for ______, so quit stuffing the ballot box")

If you made a prediction, that number is in bold. I predicted 8-9 wins in the original thread. Then, I panicked when I made the second. The panic was largely based on not having much of an offense. I'm glad the players and coaches saw more in the team than I did.

All credit to Derek Mason, the defense during the Oregon game, and a healthy dose of lowercase luck.  Rewatching the Oregon game two nights ago, I was struck by how many times Stanford came close to losing that game.  Oh my goodness.  Williamson nailing the redemption FG, Wilkes recovering the Hogan fumble, Oregon's OT FG kick boinking off the left upright, the fourth down stop, Carrington chasing down Mariota...the list goes on.

All credit to Derek Mason, the defense during the Oregon game, and a healthy dose of lowercase luck.  Rewatching the Oregon game two nights ago, I was struck by how many times Stanford came close to losing that game.  Oh my goodness.  Williamson nailing the redemption FG, Wilkes recovering the Hogan fumble, Oregon's OT FG kick boinking off the left upright, the fourth down stop, Carrington chasing down Mariota...the list goes on.

How about this fact (which I certainly would never have foreseen) - in the final 5 games vs. Oregon, OSU, UCLA twice and Wisconsin, the opponents scored a grand total of 7 points in the second half.  150 minutes of football, 7 points (a meaningless TD by UCLA in the 1st game).  When the game was on the line, the defense delivered.

Spiny - I think you mean the 4th quarter. I know Oregon scored their second touchdown of the game in the third quarter, OSU scored at least one touchdown in the third quarter, and UCLA scored a touchdown to put them up 7 in the third quarter of the Pac-12 Championship game. That stat is still really impressive for the fourth quarter in those games considering all the close games that we played.

I know Oregon scored their second touchdown of the game in the third quarter, OSU scored at least one touchdown in the third quarter, and UCLA scored a touchdown to put them up 7 in the third quarter of the Pac-12 Championship game. That stat is still really impressive for the fourth quarter in those games considering all the close games that we played.

It's kind of funny to look back and see that our thinking was colored by evaluating our team's performance based on our perception of two traditional doormats that turned out to be bowl teams. (hmmm, sound familiar?) Let that me a lesson to me.

I forgot to add that Oregon was missing at least a couple of starters--last year Stanford was missing five starters for the Oregon game due to injury.  I'll take what I can get!
