We are finally holding a head-to-head contest with University of Texas of a Texas kid in the recruiting wars. In fact, we might already have won. Durham Smythe actually was a Texas commit but recently decommitted and is now going to take an official visit to Stanford. All those are positive signs.  The further good news is that Smythe is a TE that practically everybody wants.
The 6-6, 230 lb. Smythe is rated about the same on Scout/Rivals 3 star/ 3 star ranked 15/14 at his position.  What the numbers don't do is separate receiving TEs from blocking or combo TEs. True to Stanford of late, Smythe is viewed primarily as a receiver by Stanford. No idea where he rates among that sub-group.
How good is he? Tough to beat this offer list from Rivals:
Univ. of Texas, Texas Tech, OK St., TCU, Baylor, Georgia, Texas A&M, Florida, Mississippi, Michigan, Nebraska,Kansas, Ariz. St.
and Stanford. That he would decommit and schedule his Stanford visit is a pretty good sign.
And, luckily for him, his first name is Durham. Had it been part of a British upper-class hyphenated last name...Durham-Smythe... our bretheren across the Bay would probably die laughing at how appropriate his name was for the school.
