By the way, I think that, similar to needing to be on the correct side during the national anthem, I need to see LSJUMB live and in front of me to appreciate them.  (Preferably after a game on the "sunny side" of the stadium, but I guess that doesn't happen now.)  When I see them on TV I get just a thin bit of irreverence and I don't get the musical skill and oomph that makes the irreverence work.

We sat near the middle of the stadium opposite the raised grandstand (south side?) and could hear the band announcer pretty well. 

The pre-game script involved the band doing an internet search to better understand their opponent and mid-western mascots in general.  Thus the jokes about YouTube videos and spell outs covering honey badgers, gophers etc.  It was mildly funny with the announcer pretending shock as he uncovers mid-western culture on the web.

The half-time show dealt with the writers scrambling to create a script for the show.  One writer keeps making cheese puns (Isn't this Gouda enough?, You must think I'm a muenster!) while the other writer panics that everyone will think the show is lame if they don't get started writing soon. 

Ok, it wasn't as edgy as the chainsaw formation in Oregon or Eamon McHungry in South Bend but what did any of us expect could get by the censors worried about Stanford's notorious band on national TV at the freaking Rose Bowl?  As for the Wisconsin booing, well after hearing cries of outrage over a script based on the lyrics of "Oklahoma" last year I expected no less.

In my opinion the scripting has been uneven over the years as writers come and go.  Yeah, yesterday could have used more creative spark and more than a few listeners probably agreed with the second announcer's fear that the show would be "lame" but I always enjoy the band's music, energy and unabashed support of all things Stanford.  As one who attends a LOT of Stanford sports, the band is the one constant - they are at volleyball, women's basketball, swimming etc long after other supporters have packed away their Pom-poms in anticipation of the next football season. 

And, Geeesh, Wasn't it worth a few "cheesy" puns to hear "All Right Now" after a Rose Bowl win?  I'm still smiling!

(By the way, thanks to Garvin and Oasis for a chance to meet face to face with a couple of Cardboard regulars and their families while still basking in the Rose Bowl afterglow.  Good times and dinner at Antonio's with real fans beat hunting for ESPN highlights with my long suffering wife (kids packed away in an adjoining room!) as I came down from the over-amped appreciation from the sweet smell of Pasadena roses and a win made still sweeter by 41 years in waiting!)

Those around me in the stands agreed that the trumpeter was a bit off (even comparing it to home games this year).  It just seemed that he was not very good on that day. Our non-expert opinions of course.

As far as the band, my crew thinks the band is rather frustrating.  The concept of the band is great, execution is poor.  You can't blame Rose Bowl audio for not hearing the announcer, it is the same at Stanford.  It is the script that is the issue - far too wordy for anyone to really pay attention. And when you do, and hear some lame joke, you tune out altoghter.

The formations are mostly lost on people in the crowd without access to an overhead shot.

Band highlight:  on the scoreboard in the Rose Bowl they zoomed in on the guy playing NO instrument, right next to the woman playing the milkcrate.  Hilarious. Now that is what the band means to me. Funny without trying too hard.

Now, they're simply too few members to really rock.

I know the AD is tired of their shenanigans during and not during performances (the total destruction they did to the band shack was unbelievably irresponsible), but I think they like the originality of the band.

Count me as a luke-warm supporter.

Is how an entire state's heads explode, simultaneously...as if their meltdown was an actual choreographed part of the whole band performance.  Half the fun for Stanford fans is going to the Wisconsin sites to see grown men almost wet themselves with outrage over the band.  Did it again this year.  They are mystified and outraged.  And it doesn't even have to be thematically or musically adept.  They simply cannot comprehend a band that doesn't look like it's marching out to meet Napolean on the field at Waterloo.

Nope.  Stanford mostly just silently puts scores on the big screens, although will usually announce scores from a couple particularly relevant games. My guess has been that they assume most of the crowd already knows the outcome of games played earlier.

I haven't heard a Slippery Rock score in many years.  It's one of those quirky Stanford things I also miss.
