It appears Pep Hamilton's staying for another year

I hope this staff stays until they win a natl championship. They're certainly good enough to do so, and they're in a place to do it. There will always be other jobs out there, but the chance to win it all is a rare confluence of environment, coaching, and student-athletes.

On another post an article in Forbes stated Stanford is paying close to the norm for Asst. coaches plus suppling local homes.
What is the payscale for asst. And what do homes sell or rent for in Palo Alto.  Together that must put our asst. at the top of the scale along with Alabamas, Ohio State and other top tier programs/

I hear a small fixer upper starter home in Palo Alto is easily over $1 million nowadays.

The housing was always the problem. Assistants are going to struggle to justify buying anything in Palo Alto or Menlo Park. Their salaries are OK, but buying a home should be a medium to long term commitment to an area. Long term resident is not exactly in the job description. The Palo Alto rental market is brutal, especially compared to Baton Rouge, South Bend, Ann Arbor or Columbus. They all can afford $5,000/month in rent, but it would not come close to matching up with what you can get for $2,500 in other places. That comparable housing discussion is likely not critical to the coach, but essentially to his family. Getting the housing costs out of the equation was such a big move. And then to turn it into a positive was brilliance. There are few schools that could have quality family housing near the facilities, and very few that could allow bike riding to those facilities year round. And because the houses are all together the staff families likely build much better bonds. Brilliance!!
Most top tier public schools seem to have $2+ million for the head coach, and $1.5-2+ million for the staff. The amount of compensation disclosure for the D1 schools is stunning really. I would guess Stanford is now paying at the level of the most lucrative 40 public schools.

There is a new housing development on campus - El Camino & Stanford Ave. - that asst. coaches are said to be eligible for. Stanford-owned housing, so a partial solution to the high cost of housing in PA and nearby towns. They look like nice places - townhouses and single family homes.

While the housing is likely not as attractive as you can get living in other college towns, there may be other perks they can sell. You would think that an added benefit for the young families of assistant coaches would be the Palo Alto/Menlo Parkschool system they're likely to have their kids in.

I thought it looked pretty darn nice, the Olmsted Rd athletic housing. On the other hand, if low-cost market housing is a priority maybe this wouldn't seem all too appealing. I was surprised at the number of units available, thought it would be higher.

It sounds like John Arrillaga's turned the housing situation from an obstacle to an advantage. Not only do Stanford coaches now have reasonably-priced housing, but it's on campus, enabling them to spend more time with their families.

thankfully John Arrillaga is persistent as he had long offered to build this housing but he had been rebuffed by University leadership. it has made a big difference to the coaches and their families.
on the pay, Shaw's quote is:Â "Now, the school is paying closer to scale and also gives coaches on-campus living."
I don't think we are at scale and certainly nowhere near the schools in the AP neighborhood we now reside. the link below gives an idea of what Alabama pays its football staff.Â

my guess is that our staff including Shaw totals what Saban pays his staff, but not including Saban salary

Seems I spoke too soon, re: Pep Hamilton staying. There are more suitors, apparently.
The Jets: https://twitter.com/BFeldmanCBS/status/2...1884063744
The Fightin' Lovies (i.e. whichever team Lovie Smith ends up with, if any): https://twitter.com/RuleofTree/status/29...4530921473
Bruce Feldman also speculates the Panthers might be interested.
Anyway, I was hasty. Kind of weird: don't these coaches know Pep is, like, the worst playcaller ever?

Interesting that Hamilton's getting a lot of attention and, seemingly, Mason is not. May be premature to conclude that about Mason as well, I guess.

Kevin Gemmel did a story on Mason a month ago or so that quoted his saying Stanford is where he feels he is suppose to be at least for the foreseeable future. And lo and behold, Mason has been reported to have been taking interviews.Â
The WashPo story on Hamilton made clear he ultimately wants to move on from Stanford, particularly to the D.C. area. Perhaps Hamilton wants more money and he's testing to see how valuable Shaw thinks he is?

My guess is it's a simple upside/downside calculation for each. Mason looks at his situation for next year: it's hard to imagine the Stanford defense won't be good next year (absent a force majeure), and Mason will get all the credit for its being good. Mason's career will continue on an upward ascent -- he probably gets a head coaching job for the 2014 season, one would imagine.
On the other hand, it's possible that the Stanford offense will be much better next year, but it would take a lot of things going right. If the Stanford offense does get much better, the best case scenario for Pep is that he shares credit with Shaw (but I think there's a presumption among many that the offense is Shaw's baby, so it's very possible that credit to Pep would be a footnote.) Obviously, if Pep changes jobs he's well-positioned to reap credit for whatever improvement the offense gets (though it's an open question whether getting improvement out of the Jets is particularly likely.)
Credit, of course, is what makes a career.
