Stanford had 4 players in double figures--including another good game by Ruef--as it beat SC again.
Toni Kokenis did not play and it is beginning to look like she can't be counted on this year. She was walking around and smiling in her warm ups. Not having Toni seemed to prompt Tara to play 4 bigs much of the time, except when Sara was in. Jasmine continues to look good in relief of Amber--but Tara rarely put Jasmine and Amber on the floor at the same time.Â
Chiney had 26 points and 15 rebounds, and better yet she made 8/9 free throws and 9/15 baskets. That is pretty efficient scoring--she did not have to waste a lot of opportunities to get her points. She even dribbled the length of the floor and laid it in.
Joslyn was quiet until towards the end of the first half, and then she began to take off. For most of the first half, in fact, she only had one attempt. She and Ruef were our only players who were decent from three point range--Jos had 2/3 bombs, Ruef was 1/1, and the rest of the team tonight was 3/17. With 17 points and 11 rebounds, Jos made another double-double. Add 3 blocks and she had one of her better games this season. I do wonder why Jos is developing into a second half player--in several of her better games this year most of her points came in the 2nd half.
Ruef had her first trey of the season! She scored a little here and a little there and frankly I did not realize that she had a career high 12 points until when I looked at the box score. Better yet she was 5/7. She continues her free throw slump, with just 1/4. She has been having a rough time with free throws all season, something that could cost us in tournament time. On the positive side, she had 4 assists, including a beautiful lob to Chiney.
Bonnie was cold tonight and made only 1/6 three point attempts, but her defense seemed to me to be improving.
Amber was only 3/10, but she had 5 assists, including a nifty hand-off to Chiney under the basket--and she had only 1 turnover. She made all her free throws and wound up with 10 points. She was spelled by Jasmine, who continues to look good and had a couple of very nice baskets and some dogged defense.
We started the game by turning the ball over much too much, but wound up with only 13 for the game--our season average. This game was won with a massive advantage in rebounding (43/26) and by holding SC to 33% shooting. With 16 assists on 27 made baskets it seems our passing was decent.
Now comes the key test--UCLA on Sunday, and we might face them without Toni.
