I may have my position in the CardBoard revoked, but here's a really good thread from the 59er Insider. The original poster linked a story about Energy Secretary Stephen Chu would return to the Stanford faculty, rather than to the position he held at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.

I can't really believe how much some of those guys care about Nobel counts. Also funny that no one mentioned that they have 7 times the number of living alumni we do (which I assume correlates decently with total alumni), so you'd sort of expect them to have way more Nobels from grads.

I'm joining Yvonne in jeapordizing myself with you guys with the following statement:  Until the Cold War, Kal was the premier university on the West Coast.  Let's face it.  We really were the U$C of Northern California until Frank Terman came along.  Of course today, STANFORD is the premier university in the world.  Harvard and Oxbridge are just living off their centuries old brands.

Ask any Kal grad where they would send their kids if they got into STANFORD.  We all know the answer.

Umm, it's Fred Terman.  He introduced Bill Hewlett to Dave Packard and encouraged them to start a company that changed them, Stanford, and the Bay Area forever.  While his influence was considerable, he didn't build Green Library, start Bio-X or d.school, design the Dish, dream up SLAC, hire Jim Harbaugh, or any of the other things that make Stanford unique and great.  Creating a world-leading university didn't happen overnight and it took more than just one guy.
