Today in ND's mysterious transfers, they just lost Davonte Neal. This means the three highest-rated recruits of the 2012 class for ND have all gone, having contributed nothing for them.

I'm not sure what service you are referencing but I would not say Neal was top 3 for them. And the 2 best recruits in their class dropped ND before NSD. And they lost a few other guys to tOSU. That class sure went from legendary to ok pretty quickly though. They're lucky to have stole 2 5 star guys from USC in the last class.

Are these guys ND wanted to keep? Or are they highly-rated recruits who didn't pan out and weren't going to get any playing time? I don't follow ND closely and I don't know their roster.

The guy who left today (Ferguson) is probably a didn't-want-to-keep/depth chart guy, though it's a sign of bad recruiting if you're already chasing away redshirt freshmen. It's also, I think, hard to predict sometimes who ends up becoming worthwhile contributors (and so from a purely pragmatic perspective can be bad to have too much attrition.) How many people would've predicted Usua Amanam and Josh Mauro to be such strong defensive contributors for us last year? They were, and their emergence as redshirt juniors is pretty late, relatively speaking. Because people who go to Stanford generally like it and don't want to leave hastily, we benefit strongly -- we have much better attrition numbers than other schools.

Keep in mind Shepherd didn't leave because he wanted to. I forget the details but it was something to do with a counselor at his HS that gave him bad info and he didn't have the right classes to get admitted. It was a very bizarre situation because he had already enrolled during the summer and was on campus. Their admissions people must be pretty incompetent.

Don't know if this sheds any light on the question of why ND is losing the players it's losing -- but there's a web site call "college prowler" that presents all kinds of college rankings. Says it's "by students, for student." One of their categories is called "If I Could Do It All Over Again." I.e., would you still choose your school if you were starting over?
In this "If I could" category they rank, god help us, 1326 colleges and universities. Stanford comes in fourth. C.al comes in 398th. ND comes in 1025th.
I should note that even in the lowest-ranked schools, about 80% of the respondents say they'd choose the same school. It takes hundreds before the score goes below 90%. But as long as you don't get too hung up on a difference between a score of 9.26 and 9.29, it's kind of interesting.
