But not dead...
As Tedford demonstrated during his early years, my Alma Mater can produce a solid, winning program. It will never be a football factory but that is not something that we aspire to. We simply want a program that mirrors the success of other academically-oriented programs.
The sad fact is that Tedford lost his way, seduced by a film flam assistant coach. He acknowledged his mistake (his biggest regret) privately to well-placed alums, namely, that when he stopped recruiting "smart players", the program began a death spiral from which it is now just recovering. Yep. Berkeley will be back just as we knew Stanford would be back after the horrific Harris/Teevans years.Â
It simply requires a good coach who understands how to succeed in a setting like Berkeley (or PaloAlto). Harbaugh and "early-Tedford" proved it can be done.Â
A sobering reminder to all Stanford followers. Even during the run of Big Game wins that Berkeley piled up from 2002-2006, we all knew that string would be broken and that Stanford would recover. Today, I also know that Berkeley will recover and snap their current losing string v. the Cardinal. This year? Nope. Next year? Very possibly......
After all, the cycle of sports is what keeps us coming back.........
