I am not advocating playing home/home w/ San Jose St.  I simply articulated their position and emotional baggage.  The main argument for continuing the series is they are a capable but beatable opponent.  They don't like to admit that Stanford,(maybe) Boise St. were their main opportunities get a televised game.  Oh, yeah.  They might get TV coverage for their body bag games vs. Alabama and Auburn,  but those games played in the Southeast might not be picked up in the West where it could help with their exposure deficit problems.  They are brimming with confidence that finally (and in the nick of time) getting hauled aboard the Mountain West will solve their problems.  They dream of their split of conference TV revenue.  But the Mountain West is mostly a reconstituted WAC with most of the problems left over from the old WAC.  For years Spartan posters have been saying San Jose St. was a valuable nugget for any conference because supposedly the Bay Area media market was so desirable...as if the business sharpies who run the media end of sports couldn't figure out  that  SJSU was a barely detectable midget presence in that market.

But, their option was oblivion, or whatever description you want to apply to that short-lived mashup of new and/or weak Texas football programs and least-desirable leftovers from the old WAC.  They got saved.  Still, I wouldn't want the challenges San Jose St. faces w/ their program.

I've never paid much attention to SJSU fans onlline, but I will stick up for (most of) my friends and neighbors who are SJSU fans.  I am a San Jose resident and spent the second half of the 2006 game with friends in the SJSU season ticket area.  As you would expect, the SJSU fans were deliriously giddy and threw down what I thought was some good-natured trash talk about Stanford, none of which was directed to me or my sons personally (we wore our usual Stanford gear). 

On the other hand, there is a young former SJSU football player where I work who is pretty obnoxious when he talks about playing Stanford.  He does not know my loyalties.  I will be content to sabotage his career. 

BTW, I will also note the one and only good thing about that 2006 game:  They still sold beer in Spartan Stadium at that time.

I haven't been to Spartan Stadium since, but I believe there is now a ban on alchohol sales in stadiums throughout the CSU system.  I recall in 2006 there was some discussion about the ban being transitioned in as vendor contracts expired.

I went to a couple of SJSU night games a couple of years back (Boise St and Hawaii) and beer was flowing freely.  I went with 15 people from work and we sat in the end zone with a lot of folks who were there just for the Boise Game with a 50/50 mix of Bronco and Spartan fans.  It was fun in a rowdy/edgy way with lots of reasonable jostling that edged into two near fights and several fans kicked out by security after the beer had had it's effect.  I wouldn't take my family but not unexpected. 

The sideline seats with more established fans are probably very different.

My understanding is that there is a California State University system ban on drinking alcohol in any area that has a view of the playing field. So last year fans could get beer at a beer garden that was inside the stadium grounds but had no view of the playing field. Yeah .... No reason for Stanford to leave angry when it's simply a case of the two schools' self interests no longer matching.  Puts a new spin  on the old saying - Don't go away mad, just go away.

Nonetheless, for someone like me who watched the Elway v. Elway games in front of packed and rocking houses it's a bitter pill to choke down.  Watching the Sac State game and hearing uninformed pundits complain about our scheduling "choice" as a reason to deny a BCS bid was just the incentive I needed to hold my nose and swallow. 

If you prefer the "spoonful of sugar" approach then consider the new variety we'll have in our scheduling choices.

+1 I started going to SJSU games my freshman year in 1987, and made many road trips to both Stanford and Low APR U. I loved those games in the late 80's and early 90's, they were competitive, had large SJSU fan attendance, and were a short drive away that they were close to being home games.

However, times and circumstances have changed since then due to conference realignments, TV contracts, and different goals for the SJSU and Stanford programs. As long as SJSU can find programs like Oregon State and BYU that will play SJSU home and home, and programs like Auburn that will pay millions for road games, it just doesn't make sense to make the trip to Stanford which will not play home and home and will not pay big dollars:

I will definitely will miss the Stanford series, but as Leftcoast said above, it makes sense because the two schools' self-interests no longer match up. I have no hard feelings against Stanford, and wish Stanford well this and future seasons (except against the Spartans of course).
