Montgomery looked great.  Would be nice to see him get more than 4 catches, and would be nice to see Rector and Young involved more.  If this is how good the team is in game 1 on offense, it should get better as the season evolves.

I suspect Shaw and the rest of the coaching staff didn't want to show too many of their cards this early in the season. I think if they wanted to we could have seen another two or three touchdowns.

I was pleased with the performance overall. About where I thought we'd be for a first game.

Shaw, at least in the accounts I read, did not once use the word "phenomenal" to describe Stanford's performance on Saturday.
He did, however, use it to describe SJS QB David Fales.

Actually, I feel like that's the nature of the spread.  As long as your passes average 3.3 yds per completion or better, spread offenses will take what high-percentage completions you give them.  I have a feeling that's what Big Game is going to be like if the defense doesn't sufficiently harass the kal QB.

But between whether it was a slower arrival or faster DBs, a lot of those passes could have been caught but were broken up under pressure.  That guy Benwikere had his name called all night long.

Thank you Baseball Gods for finding Tyler Gaffney unworthy.  Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.  It could have been just the play called, or the execution by Stanford,  but Wilk's early game contributions weren't what you expect from a putative co-starter.  But Gaffney was playing against the same defense and made the yardage.  But clearly a different kind of runner than Taylor.

Cajuste is a WR, and Hopkins (the TE who converted from DE) caught a pass too. So both starting TEs caught one, I believe both starting WRs (Cajuste and Montgomery) caught 4, and a number of others caught passes too. Hogan is a good short-to-intermediate passer, but not as accurate downfield.  He is certainly not the best pure passer we have had on the Farm.  He is a good competitor, has very good mobility, can be a run threat and doesn't get rattled.  He has won big games, although the defense helped mightily too in those wins.  We were relieved and happy to have him last year because the team was being held back by Nunes, who couldn't complete the short passes you need to keep the chains moving and maintain offensive flow.

Each team had only 9 possessions. So you have to take that into account when looking at the final score. A more typical number of possessions for each team would be about 12.

Stanford scored 34 points in 9 possessions, which is quite efficient. The NCAA median points per possession last season was 2.24. Stanford scored 3.78 points per possession yesterday.
