My research project senior year in high school used a whole box of punch cards, just so I could compute some correlations on data culled from the guidance office. That was done in FORTRAN on a large box with 128K memory. My prowdest accomplishment back then was writing a sort routine that worked faster than the teacher's.

That's pretty egregious. And there's this piece out now too:Â

Maybe the guy just wants to run his ship aground and exit in a blaze of glorious scandal/controversy.

I hate to say it, but I used to really like Rick Reilly, to the point that I would turn to his column first, and actually buy his book(s). For the past...I dunno...more than five, less than ten years, he's been unreadable. And often boring.

Yeah .... Rick Reilly used to be the change of pace curveball on the last page of Sports Illustrated, light hearted, maybe pandering for that emotional moment but a definite change of pace from the rest of the portentous stories in the mag. (Don't get me wrong, I like SI but its authors can play every story like the subject is as important as curing cancer.)
And yes, I get the point; Reilly's writing has seemed more formulaic lately and not as original. Still, I'm surprised at how quickly a writing career can go from the cool of the moment to trite/don't link.

In 1938 Neville Chamberlain declared "Peace in our time", Superman first appeared in Action Comics, Seabiscuit beat War Admiral ....... and C.a.l last won the Rose Bowl.

It's also not hard to find Indians who do care about such names. You can't lump in terms like "chief" with "redskins" though. You might as well lump in "colored" with the n-word.
