From his perspective then, UCLA is a team that should be able to hang right with Oregon. I'll be interested to see how that goes.

My guess is that it is a lot like the Oregon Washington game. The Bruins hang in there for approximately three quarters and then the Ducks win going away.
What I'm reasonably sure about is that it will have no predictive power about how our game will go with Oregon.

It doesn't seem like he enjoys attending away games. I wonder why he bothers ...

Football traffic at Stanford can't be any worse than the Rose Bowl on Saturday or any five minutes on the 405.

You've got that right. It's pretty lame for a fan who can't even manage to get to the game on time to criticize his team and coaches like that.Â
Given the style of the writing, I'm guessing this was just shameless angling for a mention in "This Week in Schadenfreude."

Such a nice guy and gracious guest! Sounds like the type of fan we want to see more of. I'm so, so disappointed that his time at Stanford wasn't more pleasant.
Or maybe not.
Or maybe not.
In 1938 Neville Chamberlain declared "Peace in our time", Superman first appeared in Action Comics, Seabiscuit beat War Admiral ....... and C.a.l last won the Rose Bowl.

This Bruin fan probably should just avoid going to Eugene. That probably will not be a good experience for him.

It was actually worse imho in terms of speed. It took a legitimate hour to travel the length of Embarcadero from 101 to campus 90 min before kickoff. People walked past my car who I never saw again. If it's normally that bad, then it's my first time having it that bad. If it's not normally that bad, maybe I blame it on reunion+BART strike, wherein some people who would have BART+Caltrain'ed it into campus decided to drive.
What that means is that I didn't have enough time to go get my camera from the place I was crashing at, and I have no photos of the game, sigh.

No fan base whines like the UCLA fan base does. It's cool though, because you don't hear the whining unless they lose. No team makes them whine like Stanford does.

Doesn't anyone watch the video boards in the stadium? Almost since the beginning we have had two rather annoying pre-game informational videos.Â
Video #1 - What to do in the event of an emergency. (If you are in the lower bowl...move up the aisle, glide through the tunnels, etc.)
Video #2 - DON'T DRIVE ON EMBARCADERO!!! The second video actual has a different opening line, but that is clearly the theme. It essentially goes on to say that it is insanity to try to use Embarcadero, so please use the alternate routes noted in the video.
I used to think I could just jump up Embarcadero if I arrived early enough, but generally I have learned that other routes are vastly superior for those that arrive less than 2 hours before kickoff. For a visitor, I have some sympathy since Google maps/Mapquest/Garmin/iPhone and others probably force people to that Embarcadero route. However for the rest of us there has to be an awareness that Embarcadero is very problematic. The challenge is not just car traffic, Town & Country is also an issue. The people walking between Town & Country and the Stadium dramatically impede the flow of car traffic from Embarcadero to El Camino Real. For night games I think that foot traffic is rather light (it was light for ASU because it was raining), but for games during the day there is probably additional foot traffic that negatively impacts Embarcadero.

Since the beginning? Back when I started attending football games, there was no video board on which it was worth putting up info videos :p And obviously I got to the stadium too late for info video showing...it was all game time when I showed up (score was already 3-0 and well past halfway through the second quarter).

The traffic situation is not new since the original (larger) stadium created an even bigger Embarcadero challenge. So your long term loyalty makes it even harder to understand the need to push up Embarcadero.
I am not sure what should be done to help this situation since even if you planned to get to the game on time, you were delayed by at least an hour. And I think a similar problem was expressed by visitors for other games this year. I know back in the early 90s the CHP used to put out portable traffic signs up on 101 that told drivers to take Oregon Expressway instead of Embarcadero. It might be time for Stanford AD, PAPD, CHP and others to consider traffic advisories (signs, e-mail messages, etc.)
The stadium video (which probably should run at halftime) tries to raise awareness of the alternate options ---
#1) Sand Hill to 280
#2) Campus/Stanford/Junipero Serra/Page Mill to 280 (Yes, the video implies that a visitor will be able to do that weave through campus)
#3a) El Camino to Oregon Expressway to 101
#3b) El Camino to Page Mill to 280.
#3 has been my favorite for quite some time since Page Mill and Oregon Expressway have been updated to attempt to deal with Palo Alto/Stanford commute traffic which is actually much worse than gameday traffic.

Part of the problem on the 405 is the distraction from frustrated drivers pulling over to blow their brains out. Lots of rubber-necking when that happens.

I think traffic last Saturday was worse than normal because of the reunions. A lot of people were on campus to attend reunion activities, and they were all arriving at the same time as the game traffic.

The discussion about traffic reminds me of the bad old days in the couple of years before and after the new stadium opened. Traffic was never a problem.Â
Traffic is a good thing.
I am hopeful we will increasingly pack the stadium and get lots more traffic on game days. As fans get used to that, though, they will adapt by learning alternative routes and parking strategies.
